This post would be much better with pictures

Well, the 2011 Oscars have come and gone, and I must say, I thought Sunday’s show was a little bit underwhelming.

Anne Hathaway tried but still felt pretty flat and James Franco, well, didn’t seem to be trying.  And as excited as I was that the King’s Speech got its dues, in reality, I thought almost all of the winners could have been predicted months ago.

Thankfully, we had a house full of friends to keep us otherwise entertained.  And with those friends came food – lots of lots of glorious filmic-themed food!

There were Chocolate Squirrels, a la Winter’s Bone

Strawberry Rhubarb Cheater’s Pie, from The Kids Are All Right

Seven Layer Dip (Inception)

Chocolate Mr. Potato Heads – with candy faces (Toy Story III)

(Severed) Hummus Hands (two of them, in fact, with varying lengths of tendon and bone sticking out of the wrist, because husband and wife couldn’t decide between Winter’s Bone and 127 Hours)

Black Swan Cupcakes (white cake with chocolate ganache filling and topped with vanilla frosting and black sugar)

True Grits, which paired nicely with the Vegetarian True Grit Chili.

“Like” Cookies (seriously, they were shaped and painted as the facebook “like” and “thumbs up” buttons – Social Network)

Chicken and Seitan Wings (dismembered from the chicken (and seitan?), of course – 127 Hours)

I put together a candy buffet, with something from each of the best picture nominees – my favorite was the Chocolate with a Kick (three types of chocolate, three levels of kick – sea salt, ginger, and chili pepper), in honor of Inception.

And the winner, by a narrow margin, Inception Cake - a cheesecake with an ice cream cake inside.

I love my creative friends.

So what did the winner get for their efforts?

Their very own copy of Chocolat, of course.

Filmic Friday: Filmic Favorites

First things first — The powers that be over at GOALS have decided to extend the free race entry raffle until March 15 – so if you’re on the fence about whether to throw your hat in, that gives you one more month to decide :)  And while you wait for the winner to be announced, check out the new and improved GOALS website (The team page hasn’t been updated yet but the rest of the site is up and running)!

Next — You have one more week to get in your entries for the epic Oscars Cook-off!  Post your submissions on your own blog and send me the link, or just email me with your entry.  Things are heating up in kitchens across Philadelphia for next Sunday’s live cook-off.  You don’t want to miss out on the fun, do you?

And finally – for this week’s Filmic Friday, tell me a little bit about your filmic favorites!

(1) Favorite Guilty Pleasure

The Thing Called Love (River Phoenix, Samantha Matthis, and cheesy country music… what more could you ask for?)

(2) Favorite Movie Genre

I love a good political or legal thriller… and I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for romantic comedies and cheesy sports movies with underlying social commentary.

(3) Childhood Favorites

Rags to Riches, The Peanut Butter Solution, The Parent Trap (a la Hayley Mills)

(4) Biggest Celebrity Crush

Paul Newman circa 1948… And Jake Gyllenhaal.

(5) Favorite Movie

Just one?  Not possible… How about a few (my question, so I get to make the rules, right?)? Gentleman’s Agreement, Goodbye Lenin, Little Women, How to Make an American Quilt (two Winona Rider movies?  Well that’s embarrassing!)

Your turn!

Filmic Friday: The Cook-Off Kicks Off

It’s two weeks ’til show time and we already have our first entry in the Oscars Cook-off!

Heather, of Heather Eats Almond Butter, channeled her inner-Jeff Bridges to create True Love Grits.

My favorite part?  The heart-shaped blob of hot pepper raspberry preserves on top.  If that’s not love at first sight, I don’t know what is.

Have you started working on your cinephilic masterpiece?

Filmic Friday: The AR Edition

Since I’m now bound and determined to turn you on to adventure racing one blog post at a time (don’t worry – I promise that not all posts will be AR-related), today’s Filmic Friday is dedicated to the race to end all races…

Eco-Challenge.

Created and produced by Mark Burnett of Survivor fame, the Eco-Challenge adventure races spanned several days and covered roughly 500 kilometers of ground.  It’s the race that turned Brent on to AR when he watched Burnett’s Emmy-winning television series as a kid, so indirectly, it’s the race that got me into the sport.

Sure, it may not technically be a film, but it sure makes for good filmic drama.

And don’t forget, only a few more weeks ’til the Oscars – time to get cooking!
